The International Women's Day on March 8 is aimed at combating the discrimination and disadvantage of women and girls worldwide.
This day serves as a symbol to raise awareness of existing gender disparities, but also to celebrate the achievements made towards greater recognition, visibility, and equality. Even in academia, women often face obstacles and discrimination. The fact that the proportion of women in the scientific field decreases as the scientific level increases is also referred to as the "leaky pipeline." For the past 20 years, the University of Vienna has established gender equality monitoring, and based on the new Women's Promotion and Gender Equality Plan, the Department of Culture and Gender Equality, in consultation with the Equal Opportunities Working Party, developed 2023 the Gender Equality Report, which is updated annually.
Our event "Academic Careers and Gender Bias" on March 8th at 2:00 p.m. in the Sky Lounge (12th floor) focuses on the position of women in science and academia, as well as the remaining obstacles that women encounter throughout their careers. In addition, information will be provided about the support services available at the University of Vienna to promote women's academic careers.
